City Treasurer's Office

The Office of the Treasurer is established by the Constitution of Virginia. As a Constitutional Officer, the Treasurer performs certain fiscal duties for both the City of Bristol and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Treasurer is elected every four years by the citizens of Bristol.

The scope of a Treasurer's responsibilities encompasses the collection of state and local tax levies. The Treasurer is also responsible for the safekeeping of the revenue, the appropriate accounting for and disbursement of the revenue.

REAL ESTATE 2001-2018 Taxes and Personal Property 2016-2018 Taxes for those taxpayers without an active vehicle registration in Virginia are being collected by a collection attorney. The eservices tax website does not include their collection fee. For a current payoff please call the Taxing Authority Consulting Services 1-804-545-2500.

The Treasurer's Office is located at 497 Cumberland Street, Room 102 and our business hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 to 4:30. As of January 1, 2015, the general public is prohibited from bringing cell phones and other electronic devices (Including smart watches) into the Bristol, VA Courthouse. If you are coming to our office to inquire about your Personal Property Taxes, please have your driver's license available.  If you are trying to pay for Personal Property Taxes belonging to someone else, you will need their DMV Customer Number located on their driver's license.  Personal Property is not a matter of public record and requires specific identifiers to receive any information on the taxes.

We also offer a 24 hour night depository located at the front of the Courthouse.

The Code of Virginia §58.1-39.13 requires that the oldest unpaid tax be paid first. If you owe REAL ESTATE 2001-2018 taxes or Personal Property 2016-2018 Taxes and do not have an active vehicle registration in Virginia, any payments received through this website will be REJECTED until payment has been received from Taxing Authority Consulting Services for the older delinquent tax years. The Code of Virginia §58.1-3919 requires the Treasurer, after the due date of any taxes, must notify each person who has not paid prior to that time of their delinquency.  Upon failure or refusal of such person to pay the tax, the Treasurer must proceed to collect the taxes by distress or otherwise including, but not limited to, Bank Liens, Wage Liens, or DMV Stops.
