The City of Bristol, Virginia is in receipt of a notice of violation letter from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The activity for which the notice was issued dates from spring of last year (2022) and the city has significantly altered practices and maintenance on the landfill since that time. It is also important to note this notice is for the old Bristol landfill, not the quarry landfill that neighbors it. As has been widely documented, the city recently stopped accepting materials at the quarry landfill and is undertaking considerable efforts to address emissions and odor issues at the quarry landfill. For both landfills, the city is working with the Virginia Office of Attorney General (OAG) and DEQ to develop a consent decree that would stipulate exact actions and activities are required. The city is fully committed to addressing issues at both the old landfill and the quarry landfill.
