[ARCHIVED] Code Awareness Week

CODE ENFORCEMENT

City to Hold First “Code Awareness Week”

The City of Bristol, Virginia will hold its first “Code Awareness Week”, August 20-24th, 2018. Staff from departments city-wide, including the Department of Community Development, the Department of Public Works, and the Office of the City Manager, will be out visiting neighborhoods to identify possible code compliance issues.

“Code awareness helps the City accomplish two goals: promote the health and welfare of our residents by identifying potential safety concerns; and help the City’s economic development strategy, helping to present the City in the best light possible,” according to Randall Eads, City Manager.

City staff will be issuing preliminary “Courtesy Notices” to property owners identified to have one or more of the following code compliance issues:

• Grass and overgrown vegetation of over one foot in height (50-491)
• Junk: dilapidated furniture, appliances, machinery, equipment, building materials, automobile parts, and tires (50-472)
• Litter or refuse in yard or on street or sidewalk (50-474)
• Inoperable vehicles – No current tags, clearly not functioning (86-377)
• Recreational vehicles not stored in backyard or in driveway (50-159) OR any RV that is occupied no matter where it is located (50-159)
• Unsafe and unsanitary structures (50-616)

Property owners will have thirty days to comply with the Courtesy Notice before a formal violation is issued.

The City has also opened up an online “City Helpdesk”, accessible to residents through the City website, allowing them to report code enforcement concerns, issues with street maintenance, and other problems they see around the City. Please visit City Helpdesk to learn more about this new service.

If you have questions about “Code Awareness Week”, or about the new website feature, please contact the Office of the City Manager at (276) 645-7333.
