[ARCHIVED] Notice: Suspension of Paper and Plastic Recycling

recycle

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 25, 2019

The City of Bristol, Virginia will suspend the recycling of plastic and paper products effective March 1, 2019 until a local recycling vendor can be found to accept the material.

Cardboard and aluminum/metal cans will continue to be accepted at our convenience stations, provided that residents do not put plastics, paper, trash or other materials into the collection bin.

There are no vendors in the area willing to accept plastic and paper recyclables, as there is currently no market for these materials in our region. The City has contacted the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality who is aware of the problem and is also working to identify a solution.

Residents are encouraged to reduce consumption of paper and plastic materials and to reuse items as appropriate. The City will continue searching for opportunities to reinstate the paper and plastics recycling program.

For more information, please contact Wallace McCulloch, Director of Public Works, at (276) 645-7380.
